These instructions were written using Android 15 and with the OpenVPN Connect Version 3.7.1.

Mehr-Faktor-Authentifizierung einrichten / Set up Multi-Factor-Authentification

Schritt 0: Da alle Studierenden, Mitarbeitenden und anderweitig Anghörigen der HHU das VPN mit MFA Schutz nutzen müssen, setzt die Anleitung für VPN mit MFA voraus, dass Sie die Mulitfaktorauthentifizierung bereits eingerichtet haben (z.B. Kurzzeitige Einmal-Passwörter nach dieser Anleitung https://wiki.hhu.de/x/jAA5IQ). 

Step 0: As all studens, staff and otherwise affiliated members of the HHU must use the VPN with MFA protection, the instructions for VPN with MFA require that you have already set up multi-factor authentication (e.g. short-term one-time passwords according to these instructions https://wiki.hhu.de/x/jAA5IQ).

Installation der App / App install

Schritt 1: Laden Sie aus dem PlayStore die OpenVPN-App der Firma OpenVPN herunter und installieren Sie diese.

Step 1: Download the OpenVPN app from OpenVPN company and install it.

Schritt 2: Öffnen Sie im Browser die Seite mfa.vpn.hhu.de und klicken Sie auf Login per Shibboteth.

Step 2: Open the page mfa.vpn.hhu.de in your browser and click on Login via Shibboteth..

Schritt 3: Anmelden mit Unikennung und Passwort.

Step 3: Log in with university username (Unikennung) and password.

Schritt 4  (nur bei MFA-Nutzung!): Wenn Sie als Mitarbeitender der HHU MFA eingerichtetet haben werden Sie jetzt nach Ihrem 2. Faktor gefragt. Wählen Sie einen aus aus und bestätigen Sie ihn. 

Step 4 (only if using MFA!): If you have set up MFA as an employee of HHU, you will now be asked for your 2nd factor. Select one and confirm it.

Schritt 5: Wählen Sie aus der Tabelle den .ovpn-Installer aus und downloaden Sie diesen.

Step 5: Select the .ovpn installer from the table and download it.

Schritt 4: Nach dem Download werden Sie gefragt, ob Sie die Datei öffnen wollen. Klicken Sie auf Öffnen mit Open VPN Connect.  Falls die Abfrage nicht kommt, starten Sie die OpenVPN-App. Klicken Sie oben rechts auf Upload File und dann unten auf Browse Wählen Sie den Ordner aus, in dem Sie die .ovpn-Datei gespeichert haben (in der Regel wird das der Ordner Download sein).

Step 4: After downloading, you will be asked whether you want to open the file. Click on Open with Open VPN Connect.  If the prompt does not appear, start the OpenVPN app. Click Upload File at the top right and then Browse at the bottom Select the folder in which you have saved the .ovpn file (this will usually be the Download folder).

Schritt 5: Klicken Sie auf OK, um die Datei zu importieren.

Step 5: Click OK to import the file.

Schritt 6: Das Profil wird nun importiert. Geben Sie als Username Ihre Unikennung ein. Setzen Sie anschlieend ein Häkchen bei Save password

Step 6: The profile will now be imported. Enter your university ID as the user name. Then tick the box next to Save password

Schritt 7: Im Feld Passwort tragen Sie Ihr Passwort ein und klicken zum Verbinden unten auf Connect.

Step 7: Enter your password in the Password field and click Connect at the bottom to connect.

Schritt 8: Wählen Sie nun Continue

Step 8: Now select Continue

Schritt 9: Es öffnet sich nun im Browser eine Authentifizierungsseite. Geben Sie hier  Ihre Unikennung und Ihr Unipasswort ein. Klicken Sie anschließend auf die rote Schaltfläche "Anmelden". 

Step 9: A authentification page will open in your browser. Please enter your university username and your university password. Then click (3) at the "Login" button.

Schritt 10: Nun werden Sie nach Ihrem 2. Faktor gefragt. Wählen Sie den gewünschten Token aus und ja nachdem welchen 2. Faktor Sie gewählt haben müssen Sie diesen nun nutzen.

Step 10: You will now be asked for your 2nd factor. Select the desired token and, depending on which 2nd factor you have selected, you must now use it.

Schritt 12: Wenn die Anmeldung erfolgreich war, bekommen Sie im Browser die Seite "Login success" angezeigt.

Step 12: If the login was successful the page "Login success" will be displayed.

Schritt 13: Der VPN ist nun verbunden. Zum Trennen auf den grünen Schalter rechts oben klicken. Der Schalter wird nun grau. Zum erneuten Verbinden den gleichen Schalter nutzen. 

Step 13: The VPN is now connected. To disconnect, click on the green button at the top right. The switch now turns grey. Use the same button to reconnect.
