PhD: Mathematical models of plant cell-wall degradation

Start date: As soon as possible

The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary team and develop mathematical models for the computational simulation of plant cell-wall degrading processes. The overarching goal of the project (CORNWALL, funded by the German Ministry of Research and Education, BMBF) is to understand and optimise the enzymatic processes involved in lignocellulose breakdown. With this understanding we will support the development of efficient biotechnological processes of biomass breakdown to increase the efficiency in recycling agricultural waste-products. Our project will thus contribute to support a transition from a finite-resource based economy to a sustainable bio-based economy.

Job description: The successful candidate will work in the research group ‘Quantitative and Theoretical Biology’. In close collaboration with experimental groups in CEPLAS, s/he will develop dynamic models simulating enzymatic processes involved in cell-wall degradation. The techniques used include ordinary differential equations and stochastic simulations. The models will be analysed using modern mathematical and computational techniques.
