These guidelines are to be handed to every new coworker no matter their level of experience during the first safety briefing. You are not allowed to start your laboratory work before your safety briefing. To make an appointment for a safety briefing please contact our safety officer Guido. When you are planning to work in the S1 labs you will need an extra S1 safety introduction given by Lena.

BGI / GUV-I 850-0 and the laboratory regulations (General operating instructions according to § 14 GefStoffV) are valid in the latest version (see intranet).

Safety-relevant work must not be carried out alone; at least one other employee must be present in the laboratories of the working group (at the weekend, check-in and sign-off at the guard service). Persons who are not part of the work group (e.g. trainees) may only perform laboratory work if an employee or an intern is present in the same laboratory. Trainees must receive a safety instruction from the advisor before the start of their work. The emergency plan must also be discussed during the safety briefing.

Always wear protective goggles and a lab coat in the laboratory (exception: the shelter protected by a protective disc). If you need a new lab coat please contact our TA Kascha. If hazardous work requires further protection (eg gloves, full face protection, ear protection), this is to be applied. Emergency exits must be kept clear. Care must be taken to cleanliness, order and noise. Clothes must be stored in wardrobe cabinets.

Desiccators, rotary evaporators and suction bottles may only be operated with shatter-proof glass parts. Operating instructions and / or operating instructions for devices (eg autoclaves, microwave devices, centrifuges) must be observed. Only special reinforced  pressure hoses may be used as cooling water hoses. Both ends must be secured with hose clips. The hoses must be checked regularly.

Operational instructions are necessary if (1) a published reaction has led to unexpected disturbances and (2) reactions with a special risk potential (use of very toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, explosive, self-ignitable, highly inflammable and explosive substances) are planned. The latter may only be carried out after consultation with the AK head and according to the operating instructions. All employees must have their equipment / reactions checked for the first time by a doctoral student, a promoted employee, or Prof. Daumann. The operating instructions and / or safety data sheets of the individual hazardous substances must be read, observed and available. Use the internal and external information sources (e.g. Damaris).

Always close the solvent canister (waste)!

Fire loads (e.g. solvent canisters, empty cartons) must always be kept as low as possible. Reactions may only be carried out overnight after thourough risk assessment (name, telephone number and reaction must be attached to the front of the fume hood). Water monitors must be installed. As an exception to this rule, it is also permissible to stir solutions in the other laboratories (1) without the addition of heat by means of a magnetic stirrer, and (2) to dry solid samples in a vacuum. All the fire loads must be removed beforehand from the used fume hoods.

Gases: Gas bottles should be stored in respective safety cabinets or tightened to the bench with corresponding holders. Gas bottles with toxic or flammable gases must not be connected to selectable gas lines.Close valves of all compressed gas cylinders (also argon) in the evening. After installation of a new gas inlet device, check with inert gas for leaks (or with leakage spray).

Computer security: in the case of problems (viruses, etc.), the administrator must be notified immediately. Please note: THE COMPUTERS ARE FOR WORK PURPOSES ONLY!

At the end of the lab work, hazardous substances must be stored safely, they must not remain in the fume cupboards. Unused electrical appliances are de-energized (all rotary switches and tilt switches of the heating agitators are set to "NULL"), media is turned off, screens are switched off. Windows must be closed, the light switched off, the laboratory doors must be closed.

In the case of critical substances (in the event of a risk of exposure of, for example, odor-intensive substances, toxic substances liable to aerosol, forming suspended particles), the scale shall be placed in the fume cupboard.

Low-boiling LM (e.g. ether, pentane, dichloromethane) are only stripped off under normal pressure at the Roti. Vacuum may be applied for drying.

By working in our laboratories, you are obligated to comply with these instructions.
