Acquiring a PhD position in the Daumann group does not make you a PhD student automatically!

Register yourself within 3 months of starting your PhD by filling in the online registration form. The “Promotionsbüro” (PhD registration services) will then contact you with all relevant information. Also see the registration website for more details on the registration process

If you want to register as an iGRAD member, do not forget to choose the iGRAD version of the Supervision Agreement.

You will be required to select a supervisor (Betreuer) and mentor.  Throughout your PhD, you will have annual meetings with your supervisor and mentor, where you will discuss your project progress.  These meetings need documentation via the provided forms.

  • Betreuer: this will be Prof. Dr. Lena Daumann.
  • Mentor: this is a professor from HHU of your choice. There are possibilities to assign external mentors, though this needs further approval. Requirements for any external mentors are: professor/ habilitated leader of a research group, affiliated with a university or institute. The university tends to prefer in-house mentors. The main purpose of your mentor though is to be a middleman between you and the main supervisor, should conflicts arise. They don't need to be involved in your research.
  • Secondary supervisor: an optional choice. This name will just appear on paper, there are no additional responsibilities to this task.

All required documents and forms for the registration process and the follow-up meetings as well as the hand-in of the thesis (including the Promotionsordnung) can be found here.

Information on how to enrol as a doctoral researcher (= student status; gives access to HHU card, NRW Ticket, reduced mensa pricing, general student discounts) can be found here - you will need to pay the full semester fee to do so. Please note that you can only do this after you have written confirmation of your acceptance by the Promotionsbüro.

iGRAD is a support service and graduate school that provides services (workshops, career services, scholarship information and counselling) to PhD applicants, doctoral researchers and PostDocs. Lena is an official iGRAD supervisor, but participation in the iGRAD scheme is not mandatory. For more information on iGRAD, choose the respective header that applies for you. Register as a member, and fill in the form for PhD students. Send a digital copy to igrad@hhu.de and a hardcopy to [iGRAD; Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf Universitätsstr. 1; Building: 26.11; Floor/Room: O0.2; 40225 Düsseldorf].

iGRAD - The Graduate Academy of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences - is the graduate school for our department. They offer workshops (mandatory minimum of three workshops + good scientific practise training).

Tipp: attending the good scientific practise workshop online is the general inofficial recommendation by previous attendees. Most other workshop are worth attending in person.
